Flight Club
A flight club is an organization that individuals can join in order to pursue flying activities. Most of these organizations allow individuals to rent aircraft and then fly them. A flight club will often also provide flight training, flight planning facilities, pilot supplies and other associated services such as social functions, fly ins and fly outs to other airports. Those who was to pursue a flying hobby should look for a flight club to join. A flight club is also an excellent option for those who want to get their start as a commercial pilot. A flight club will typically rent out general aviation aircraft that they own. The most popular of these aircraft in North American and European flight clubs are the Cessna 152, the Cessna 172 and the Piper Cherokee. Although for those looking to find experience in specialized aircraft then there are also flight clubs available that have vintage planes, aerobatic planes and helicopters to rent and fly. There are even specific flight clubs that specialize in providing glider rentals and training. Another option is Aircraft Type Clubs which specializes in a specific category of aircraft and devote their time and resources to providing information and support to just one type of aircraft or a specific group of aircraft.
Most of the available flight clubs can be found at smaller airports in either suburban or rural areas. There are not many located within cities since they prefer to stay away from the excess traffic found at the major airport hubs.
When selecting a flight club there are two main types you can choose between. These are equity and non-equity flying clubs. An equity flight club means that each member of the club will own a share of the airplane or airplanes and agree to pay a certain amount of monthly dues towards the ownership costs which includes hanger fees, insurance and annual maintenance. The members will also agree on an hourly rate to charge to individuals renting aircraft through the club. For non-equity flight clubs individuals don’t own a share of the aircraft, rather they pay an initiation fee, a monthly fee for repair costs and then an hourly rate when they want to use the aircraft.
